Supporting Your Recovery
Eating Disorders
Our Approach
We specialise in the assessment and treatment of Eating Disorders. Our approach to managing Eating Disorders starts with an initial assessment where we will understand the nature and severity of your difficulties. Often this will take into account your thoughts, emotions, behaviours and physical sensations. We then develop a comprehensive and tailored plan that provides you an effective, compassionate and transparent therapy experience.
At Swift Psychology we use an integrative approach to treat anxiety which often involve approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Eating Disorder Types
The most common eating disorders are:
- Anorexia Nervosa – trying to control your weight by not eating enough food, exercising too much, or both
- Bulimia – losing control over how much you eat and then taking drastic action to not put on weight
- Binge Eating Disorder (BED) – eating large portions of food until you feel uncomfortably full.
What Does Treatment Involve?
The treatment for Eating Disorders includes a thorough assessment to understand the ways your thoughts, emotions, behaviours and physical sensations are connected. Following assessment, we work to challenge negative thinking patterns and develop more effective coping mechanisms to support your well-being. There is also a large emphasis on how to promote healthy eating and exercise behaviours where appropriate.
How Effective is Treatment?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one treatment approach that is effective for Eating Disorders. CBT provides a goal-oriented and safe approach that has been shown to be 60% effective. Eating Disorders are quite complex by nature and so this may require further specialist support from healthcare professionals such as nutritionists alongside psychotherapy.
