Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Our Approach
We are highly experienced in the treatment of OCD. Our approach to managing OCD disorders commences with an initial assessment where we will understand the nature and severity of your OCD alongside the impact on your daily functioning. From this, we will develop a comprehensive and tailored treatment plan that best suits your needs.
At Swift Psychology we use an integrative approach to treat OCD which often involve approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT).
OCD Symptoms
If you have OCD, you’ll usually experience frequent obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.
- An obsession is an unwanted and unpleasant thought, image or urge that repeatedly enters your mind, causing feelings of anxiety, disgust or unease.
- A compulsion is a repetitive behaviour or mental act that you feel you need to do to temporarily relieve the unpleasant feelings brought on by the obsessive thought.
What Does Treatment Involve?
The treatment for OCD typically includes developing a formulation (a template for what is happening), from this we then look at modifying negative thoughts, challenging intrusive thoughts or behaviours and gradually support you in facing the distressing beliefs.
How Effective is Treatment?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a safe treatment that has supported many people in overcoming their symptoms of OCD. Research has shown that 75% of people with OCD are significantly helped by CBT treatments with recovery rates of up to 80%.
