Processing Your Trauma
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
We have supported many individuals in overcoming and managing PTSD. Given the complexity of PTSD, we ensure that we provide a tailored approach allowing you to make gradual and continued progress.
At Swift Psychology we use an integrative approach to treat stress which often involves utilising components of Trauma Focused- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT).
There is a range of PTSD symptoms that range from mild to severe. Most often, someone living with PTSD will experience:
- Repetitive and distressing images or sensations
- Physical sensations, such as pain, sweating, feeling sick or trembling
- Sleeping problems
- Difficulty concentrating
- Avoiding certain people or places that remind you of the trauma
What Does Treatment Involve?
The treatment for PTSD includes a thorough and comprehensive assessment to understand the ways your thoughts, emotions, behaviours and physical sensations are connected your traumatic event. Following assessment, we work to challenge negative thinking patterns and develop more effective coping mechanisms to support your well-being. There may also be an emphasis on reliving the event in order to process the traumatic memory and overcome your current feelings towards this.
How Effective is Treatment?
At Swift Psychology we use an integrative approach to overcoming PTSD. This means that we can tailor the our therapy to allow you to develop the skills to manage the effects of your trauma. Talking therapies and particularly CBT has been shown to be very effective in the management of PTSD with many studies suggesting it is as, or more effective than other forms of psychological therapy and psychiatric medications.
